We are posting homeschool days and other family friendly events to make it easier for homeschool families to find experiential learning opportunities in the SE USA. Join us on the second Wednesday of each month for the Southern Museum's Homeschool Workshop Series. Each multidisciplinary workshop features a hands-on project or game, and includes guided activities, tours, or demonstrations. Learn new concepts and apply them by creating your own invention, art project, or machine!
This workshop series is S.T.E.A.M.-powered, and includes Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math, plus a healthy dose of history! We address a new train-themed subject each month and incorporate different subjects and learning styles. Check below for our semester schedule, and be sure to visit each workshop!

Day & Time: Second Wednesday of every month, September — December and February — May
10:00am-1:00pm (drop in anytime!)
Guided tours or demonstrations are every half hour.
Admission: $5 for participants and accompanying adults
Free for Museum members!
Includes admission to the museum
Ages: Kindergarten-5th grade (ages 5-12)
Older and younger siblings are welcome to attend. Younger children will require assistance from an adult.

September 12, 2018: Transcontinental Railroad Race

In this workshop, students will learn about westward expansion, social and political history, and structural engineering.
October 10, 2018: Shocking Circuits
Investigate circuitry in this shocking workshop! Build a circuit, discover how a model train layout works, and create your own electrically-powered invention. In this workshop, students will learn to build simple and complex circuits and how they relate to model train layouts.
November 14, 2018: Speedy Delivery (NEW)
Tired of waiting for your package to arrive? Discover the ins and outs of freight trains and see if you can make a speedy delivery! In this workshop, students will discover complex delivery logistics, economics, and challenges by playing an exciting delivery game.
December 12, 2018: Winter Trains (NEW)
It may be getting cold out, but the trains still have to run! Discover what it takes to keep the rails open, despite the ice and snow. In the workshop, students will explore how trains and railroads adapt to ice and snow, creating their own solutions to these wintery challenges.
