Since breaking onto the music scene in 2013 with the support of fellow East Oakland native Raphael Saadiq, Marcel has stood out as an individual, that Oakland swag permeating both his music and stage presence. While it seems today’s rappers and singers seem to be fighting to occupy the same space, Marcelhas crafted a style that embraces his Hip-Hop influences while putting full emphasis on the intricate story lines and bold musicality that makes for the best R&B.

That marriage of street saavy attitude, reality-driven lyricism and artful harmonies is on full display on his independent debut album GMFU (Got Me [email protected]#$%^ Up). Marcelreturns a more mature artist, navigating the full range of topics on the forefront of his average peer’s mind: from love and lust to jealousy and success. The collection balances mid-tempo celebrations of nights out with the fellas and new love interests with the type of baby-making ballads young R&B singers seem to have all but abandoned these days. The sonically diverse project allows Marcelto exercise his full vocal and artistic range without losing its cohesiveness.

GMFU also serves as a declaration of independence of sorts. “This project is a reset for me,” he explains. “It's the musical expression of a range of emotions that I've experienced while in this industry. “Got me fucked up” is a phrase I would often say to myself while in the middle of opinions and directions, listening to every voice but the one inside. Making this album has taught me to trust myself and my team completely. It was a journey to find my center. They didn’t want me to be aware so I found enlightenment.

Adrian Marcel’s journey within the industry hasn’t come without its fair share of rewards and accomplishments though. Following the release of his debut mixtape 7 Days of Weak, hosted by Raphael Saadiq, he instantly began drawing comparisons to the likes of Miguel and Trey Songz. A year later, he returned with Weak After Next, which spawned the RIAA-certified gold single “2 A.M.” featuring Sage The Gemini. To date, the song has garnered 50 million views on VEVO, a testament to the lasting power of Marcel ’s music and the connection he creates with each and every fan. Following the release of his sophomore effort, he took his music on the road, first as a BET Music Mattersartist, which took him on a national tour sponsored by Nissan; and later on a 15-day tour of Australia and New Zealand.

At every stop, Adrian Marcel’s stage show makes believers out of every person in attendance. That every-day relatability that is such an integral part of his music is an even bigger component of his performance. “I make music for the soul,” says the 25-year-old. “It’s not a listening thing it's a feeling thing. Where I'm from we’re big on feeling that's why we always say ‘Ya feel me?’ My music is emotional: I sing, the bass thumps, the drums slap: and if nothing else you will feel me.” That’s that Oakland. And the city seems to agree: in late 2016, Adrian Marcelwas chosen to appear alongside Saadiq and fellow Bay Area natives Shamar Moore and Goapele to represent his hometown in a citywide billboard campaign titled Oaklandish.

With the release of GMFU, Adrian Marceltakes his rightful place in the current R&B resurgence alongside the likes of Bryson Tiller, Ty Dolla Sign, and BJ The Chicago Kid. And just like each of his peers, he brings something different to the game; something the game’s been missing. And once he delivers the project, the game will never be the same.
