WonderRoot presents a conversation with Devyn Springer and Makeda Lewis, the artists from our current exhibit Young Dreamer. Both artists will be providing insight into their work and into the complex narratives that fuel their practice.
Following this artist talk, bring your voice as we will be facilitating an open mic centering queer perspectives. If you are interested in participating in the open mic please contact our Arts Innovation and Event Specialist, Iman Person at [email protected]
This event is free and open to the public.
ABOUT YOUNG DREAMER
Devyn Springer navigates the nonlinear nature of the world as a Black queer Muslim and how to cooperate within these differing identities that have been ascribed to him. His work focuses on exposing the intersections where varied identities collide, whether those intersections be between race and gender, sexuality and religion, or hazy combinations of several fluid identities.
Makeda Lewis magnifies the mechanisms of how collective healing begins with radical honesty with and acceptance of the self. Botanicals, insects, sea creatures and feminine, queer and non binary people are the most frequent subjects in her work. She is influenced by a range of philosophies and ideas, including but not limited to black feminism, the life-death cycle, queer as personal and political, and love as a skill and choice.
